Ombudsman Collects Stakeholder Input for Systemic Study on Palm Oil Governance

PALMOILMAGAZINE, PALANGKARAYA – The Indonesian Ombudsman received extensive input from ministries, regional governments, smallholders, and related associations in the palm oil sector to develop a systemic study on palm oil governance.

A focus group discussion (FGD) held at Luwansa Hotel, Palangkaraya, on Thursday, August 22, 2024, aimed to gather insights on the challenges facing the industry.

Ombudsman RI member Yeka Hendra Fatika emphasized the importance of involving various ministries, institutions, and regional governments to gain a comprehensive understanding of governance issues in the palm oil sector.

“The inputs we gather will serve as recommendations for the Ombudsman to conduct a systemic study and improve policy,” Yeka stated, as reported by Palmoilmagazine.com from the official Ombudsman website on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

The FGD focused on public service perspectives, encouraging stakeholders to share their expertise. The findings from the systemic study will be communicated directly to the relevant ministries and institutions after the transition to the new government.

Yeka also said the systemic study should be finished in the midst of September 2024. “We believed the study would significantly deliver impacts systemically,” he said.

One director of Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency, Sunari appreciated the initiative of Ombudsman to start the systemic study. “From the field visit in Central Kalimantan and Riau Province, we would wait for the recommendation from Ombudsman to improve palm oil governance in Indonesia, namely in (independent and plasma) smallholders, and multi-national scale companies,” he said.

The participants in the FGD were from Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial/National Land Agency, Coordinator Ministry in Economy, Ministry of Trade, Ministry of National Development Plan/National Development Plan Agency and Central Kalimantan Province.
