PALMOILMAGAZINE, CILACAP – In the midst of global challenges to reduce carbon emissions and transition to renewable energy sources, PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) is at the forefront of the aviation industry’s journey toward a more sustainable future.
As part of its commitment to producing environmentally-friendly aviation fuels, KPI has unveiled its ambitious plan to achieve 100% palm kernel oil-based bio-aviation turbine (bioavtur) production at Kilang Cilacap by 2026.
The Green Refinery at Kilang Cilacap is currently manufacturing Bioavtur-Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) with a palm kernel oil content of 2.4% or refined bleached deodorized palm kernel oil (RBDPKO). This production facility has a daily capacity of 9,000 barrels per day (bpd).

But KPI will not stop here. In aviation project, Green Refinery Kilang Cilacap Fase 2, KPI planned to escalate the substance of vegetable oil in bioavtur -SAF to be 100%. The project that involves kinds of materials, such as, crude palm oil (CPO), refined bleached deodorized palm oil (RBDPO), and used cooking oil (UCO) are scheduled to operate in 2026.
Director of PT KPI, Taufik Aditiyawarman said that Bioavtur-SAF has the big potential to reduce CO2 emission in civil aviation industries. It would answer the challenges about environmental product and the same with target to get zero carbon emission.
“This is the answer of the challenges for KPI about sustainable environmental product and zero carbon emission target,” he said, as Palmoilmagazine.com quoted from Bisnis.com.
Bioavtur-SAF has qualified international standards in aviation turbine specification Avtur ASTM D 1655, Defstan 91-91 latest issued, and Decision of General Director of Oil and Gas Number.59 K / 2022. Bioavtur-SAF had series of tests, such as, ground round and flight test SAF to engine jet CFM56-7B in Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten on 27 October 2023. This proved its reliability and quality.
Besides producing Bioavtur-SAF, Green Refinery Kilang Cilacap Fase 2 would escalate the capacity of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) process from 3.000 bpd to be 6.000 bpd. Green Refinery RU IV Cilacap Fase 1 which has been developed since February 2022, successfully created low emission product in green-house gas emission. The main product of the unit is green diesel within 100 percent renewable material which also has Sulphur better than Euro V standards. (T2)
