Migrant Worker Killed on Palm Oil Plantation in Malaysia: Indonesian Consulate Investigates

PALMOILMAGAZINE, SARAWAK – A tragic incident involving Gafur, a migrant worker from Lombok Timur, Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB), ended when he was shot on a palm oil plantation in Simpang Ngu, Niah, Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia. The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching is currently investigating the case.

According to a report from Antara cited by Palmoilmagazine.com on Friday (2/8/2024), R. Sigit Witjaksono, General Consul of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, stated that an autopsy was conducted by local authorities on Thursday (1/8/2024).

“The Indonesian Police technical staff and consulate protection team will continue to monitor the case,” Sigit said.

Miri’s local Police Chief, Alexson Naga Chabu, confirmed that they received information from a foreigner on Monday (29/7) around 20:00 local time (19:00 WIB) about a deceased body found at a private palm oil company in Sepupok, Niah, Miri, Sarawak.

The first investigation from the local police revealed that the dead body was a foreigner but the citizenship was not mentioned. The local police still investigated the suspects, witness and evidences to help the investigation as regulated in Chapter 302 Kanun Keseksaan (KUHP).

The reports from Utusan Borneo mentioned that the victim was 40 years old and found with shot in the body, scars at his forehead, eyes, neck, and bailey I a private palm oil company. The local police of Miri said that the victim came to an end with the shot and scars in his body.

The case multiplied the incidents that had something to do with Indonesian migrant in other country. The Government of Indonesia, through General Consulate of Indonesian Republic, promised to always monitor the case and serve justice for the victim.

The Gafur family in Lombok Timur had been informed about the accident and the victim would be immediately taken to Indonesia and be buried. The Government of Indonesia suggested that every migrant worker should be aware and report every threat or violence to the local authority or nearest general consulate. (P2)
