PALMOILMAGAZINE, PALANGKARAYA – PT Sawit Sumbermas Sarana (SSMS) Tbk., a palm oil plantation company in Central Kalimantan Province, has partnered with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) to successfully rehabilitate two orangutans from Sekolah Hutan Nyaru Menteng. On Wednesday (October 2, 2024), the orangutans—one male and one female—began their final rehabilitation process before being released into the wild.

This initiative aims to boost the orangutan population on Badak Besar Island, located in the Salat Island cluster of Pulang Pisau Regency. Both orangutans underwent intensive rehabilitation at Sekolah Hutan Nyaru Menteng and are now prepared to transition to the pre-release stage on Badak Besar Island.

The Salat Island cluster, managed by SSMS and BOSF, spans over 2,000 hectares and provides an ideal environment for orangutan conservation. Its rich ecosystem closely resembles the orangutans’ natural habitat, offering abundant food sources and isolation to facilitate adaptation and socialization.

CEO of PT Sawit Sumbermas Sarana Tbk., Jap Hartono, reaffirmed SSMS’s commitment to sustainability and the protection of orangutans, highlighting the company’s dedication to conserving all living creatures.

“Our cooperation with BOSF means our commitment to the environmental sustainability and natural conservation,” he said to Palmoilmagazine.com.

The initiative would be about not only responsibility of SSMS but emphasizd the it would be significant to get conservation and return every orangutan to their natural habitat. By the two, the total population of orangutan in Badak Besar Island is 41, they would adjust their instinct and natural behavior as the preparation to get back to the wild. (P2)
