Innovative Collaboration: Transforming Palm Oil Sticks into Economic Handicrafts in Hutan Panjang and Darul Aman

PALMOILMAGAZINE, BENGKALIS – The collaborative efforts between the service team from the Faculty of Social and Political Science at Universitas Riau (Unri) and the Environment Fund Management Agency (EFMA) have proven successful in transforming palm oil sticks into cost-effective handicrafts. This partnership engaged the residents of Hutan Panjang and Darul Aman, Sub-district of Rupat, predominantly comprising members of The Akit community.

Leveraging the local expertise, the palm oil sticks were skillfully crafted into various handicrafts, including plates and other items. Before handing over a sharpening machine to the local community to streamline the production process, the service team took necessary steps.

Adianto, the Chairman of the EFMA Team at Unri, expressed the hope of marketing the unique products created by the villagers of Hutan Panjang and Darul Aman. He shared this aspiration during a meeting with officials from the Trade and Industry Agency of the Bengkalis District on Thursday, November 30, 2023.

Adianto would sell their products because the villagers live around palm oil plantations where they are far from the urban. EFMA Unri team asked for the support from Trade and Industry Agency District of Bengkalis. Adianto also hoped that the product markets would be more efficient and would be sold to many regions.

Head of Trade and Industry Agency District of Bengkalis, Zulpan said that the region has wide palm oil plantations. District of Bengkalis would be in synergy to help, promote, and sell the handy-crafts from palm oil sticks.

Zulpan knew that palm oil sticks would have good market potential and the products were exported by other regions. He said that the district is read to take for advantages on abundant materials with modern technology and ideas to get high quality- products.

District of Bengkalis promised to sell the products in many ways, such as, promotion through exhibition, specific souvenir from Bengkalis, social media, and online e-platform. The service team also handed over ‘brief policy’ to Zulpan by hoping to deliver helps in publishing policy in the agency.

The audience was attended by the representatives in promotion of National Crafts Agency, Said Busra Mufrizal; Head of Industry Development, Yuliani Eka Safitri; and Head of Market, Henry Dohar Parlindungan Togatorop.
