PALMOILMAGAZINE, SANUR – Sustainable palm oil management is crucial in balancing economic growth, environmental conservation, and social welfare. M. Saparis Soedarjanto, Secretary of the Directorate General of Sustainable Forest Management at the Ministry of Forestry, emphasized the importance of integrating oil palm plantations with natural ecosystems, particularly in conservation forest areas.
Speaking at the 7th International Conference on Oil Palm and Environment (ICOPE), Saparis highlighted that Indonesia’s population growth rate of 1.25% per year between 2010 and 2020 has driven increased land use, including for palm oil plantations. This expansion has contributed to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. A holistic approach to palm oil management is therefore essential to maintaining ecological balance.
“One key to sustainability in the palm oil industry is integrating oil palm cultivation with agroforestry systems, where oil palm is combined with other productive crops. Additionally, wildlife corridors play a crucial role in conserving biodiversity and ensuring ecological balance,” Saparis stated at the ICOPE conference, attended by Palmoilmagazine.com on Thursday (13/2/2025).

He further explained that responsible management should consider factors such as soil type, climate, and local biodiversity. Integrating oil palm plantations with High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF) is a key strategy for balancing economic needs with environmental and social preservation. Conservation forests play a vital role in water resource regulation, carbon storage, and preserving local cultural heritage.
Saparis also stressed that the sustainability of the palm oil industry requires strong collaboration between government, industry players, and local communities. “Integrating forests with oil palm cultivation is not just a strategic option, but an absolute necessity for building a responsible and sustainable industry,” he asserted.
By implementing better conservation practices, the palm oil industry is expected to continue generating economic benefits without compromising environmental sustainability. These efforts will also help safeguard natural resources for future generations. (P2)
