PALMOILMAGAZINE, DUBAI – To achieve the 2060 net zero emission (NZE) target, PT Pertamina (Persero) has successfully implemented a series of high-impact programs. This achievement was showcased at the Conference of the Parties (COP) 28 in 2023 in the United Arab Emirates.
Oki Muraza, Senior Vice President of Research and Technology Innovation at PT Pertamina, explained how the company adeptly addressed the energy trilemma, tackling concerns of energy affordability, sustainability, and security. The strategic approach was tailored to offer solutions to the surging energy demand, which has been rising by 3.6 to 4.2 percent annually.
Actively participating in the development of new renewable energy sources, such as bioenergy and geothermal, PT Pertamina has been at the forefront of innovation. Oki emphasized that the company’s successful energy transition programs have effectively slashed greenhouse gas emissions by 31 percent from 2010 to 2022.

“In 2022 the rank of environment, social, and governance (ESG) of Pertamina increased to be 22,1. Pertamina was in the second in integrated oil and gas industry – category. The rank significantly got better from 2021. This is a pride,” Oki said, as in the official statement to Palmoilmagazine.com, Monday (4/12/2023).
As part sustainable energy strategy, Pertamina implemented some things, such as, reducing and advantaging flare gas, capturing methane, and getting efficient energy. Reducing emission derived from many sources, such as advantaging exhaust gas, energy efficiency, gas fuel, and others.
Pertamina also involved in developing carbon capture and storage (CCS) and also carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology. Having collaboration with others enable to construct nine locations to capture carbon in Indonesia.

In transportation sector, Pertamina also encouraged decarbonization by developing biofuel, including biodiesel, and bioethanol that focus to reduce emission in transportation sectors. These contributed 20 percent of the total emission.
Pertamina also actively developed geothermal in six regions in Sumatera, Java, and Sulawesi. Geothermal production operational capacity in 2023 reached 672,5 megawatt (MW) with the plan to multiply the capacity to be 340 MW for the next two years.
Not only focusing in renewable energy, Pertamina is also developing green refinery. The second phase development is in Cilacap, Central Java Province with hydrogen production capacity up to 6 kilo barrels per day.

Besides, Pertamina proposed to develop hydrogen in five clusters in many regions in Indonesia. they would have hydrogen potential up to 1,8 million tons per year.
Oki mentioned that collaboration, technology development and the support of regulation were the successful keys in energy transition and emission reduction strategy. The company would keep cooperating with strategic partners and need incentives from the government to encourage technology transfer, minimize risks, and encourage the company to develop more. The achievements in Pertamina would be the inspiration for other energy industries in the globe to realize NZE targets in 2060.
Director Transmission and Plan System PT PLN, Evy Haryadi believed that the collaboration between PLN and Pertamina would deliver positive impact to solve the challenges in energy transition. (T2)
