PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Since 2022, the Forum for the Development of Kampung Batik Laweyan (FPKBL) and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) have established a strategic partnership, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration aims to drive innovation in the batik industry, particularly by developing stearin-based batik wax—derived from palm oil—as a renewable and more environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum- based paraffin.
Through joint research and development efforts, FPKBL successfully introduced palm-based batik wax in 2024, a breakthrough that not only promotes a more sustainable batik industry but also enhances the utilization of palm oil derivatives in traditional crafts. This achievement represents a tangible step towards sustainability and reducing dependence on fossil-based raw materials. FPKBL has developed an innovative batik wax formula containing 60% hydrogenated palm stearin (HPS), offering a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based wax and paraffin. This innovation has been tested and proven effective, providing an eco-friendly option for batik artisans.
This initiative is supported by key stakeholders and RSPO members, including Apical, which supplied HPS for testing; WWF, which contributed to the development of a sustainable action plan and promoted the procurement of sustainable products; CECT Universitas Trisakti and Daemeter, which provided managerial and operational support; and Control Union, which facilitated RSPO certification for FPKBL.

With this support, FPKBL will participate in INACRAFT 2025, taking place from February 5 to 9, 2025, at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC). Recognized as Indonesia’s largest craft exhibition, this event provides an ideal platform to showcase the integration of sustainable palm oil in batik production. The event’s theme, “Sustainability and Collaboration,” aligns with ongoing efforts to promote sustainable batik practices.
At INACRAFT 2025, FPKBL will present batik products made using sustainable palm oil-based materials, particularly the newly developed batik wax formula. FPKBL will also demonstrate how this wax—containing up to 60% hydrogenated palm stearin (HPS)—can replace traditional petroleum-based wax, offering a viable and eco-friendly alternative for batik artisans across Indonesia.
During the exhibition, the collaboration will officially launch and introduce the new batik wax formula to the public, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize batik production towards greater sustainability. The launching of Palm-Based Batik Wax will take place on February 5,
2025, at 3:00 PM WIB at the Main Stage, Hall B, JICC. This initiative also aims to gauge market response and gather feedback from industry stakeholders, including potential buyers and advocates of sustainable products. (P2)
