PALMOILMAGAZINE, BEIJING – President Joko Widodo and the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe, convened at the China World Hotel in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
The primary agenda of their meeting was to deliberate and enhance cooperation between the two nations, with a specific focus on economic collaboration.
During their bilateral discussions, the two leaders explored various facets of economic cooperation. President Joko Widodo also put forth a proposal to the Sri Lankan Government, suggesting the removal of the ban on palm oil imports from Indonesia. He emphasized that palm oil is a key commodity for Indonesia, produced in adherence to stringent sustainability standards.

“I propose that we have to establish special mechanism to re-open palm oil market access from Indonesia in Sri Lanka,” President Joko Widodo said, as in the official statement to Palmoilmagazine.com, Tuesday, (17/10/2023).
Besides, he did welcome what Sri Lanka planned to make preferential trade agreement with Indonesia. Trade volume in the two countries decreased 27,5 percent in 2022.
“I do welcome the good will of Sri Lanka to make preferential trade agreement with Indonesia. We have to cooperate to escalate trade value and reinforce economic relation between our countries,” President Joko Widodo said.
The meeting was attended by some officials from Indonesia, such as, Minister of External Affairs, Retno Marsudi; Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan; Minister of Enterprises who is also as Ad Interim Coordinator Minister in Maritime and Investment, Erick Thohir; Cabinet Secretary, Pramono Anung; Ambassador of Indonesia for People’s Republic of China, Djauhari Oratmangun.
