PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – The Geophysics, Climatology, and Meteorology Agency (GCMA or BMKG) held the Climate and Air Quality Fair 2024 on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at the GCMA auditorium in Jakarta. The event aimed to disseminate the latest information on air quality and promote multi-sector collaboration to address climate change and air quality issues. It was attended by GCMA Secretary Dwi Budi Sutrisno and Deputy in Climatology Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan.
A primary focus of the fair was to introduce the air quality information services provided by GCMA, including an early warning system for extreme air quality events, accessible to the public through GCMA’s official website. This service is intended to serve as a reference for stakeholders to develop strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
“Climate and Air Quality Fair 2024 is crucial for fostering collaboration across various sectors to find solutions for climate change and air quality challenges. Such collaboration is expected to positively impact sustainable development and the well-being of the community,” Ardhasena stated in an official announcement, as quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

He also highlighted the interconnectedness of air quality and climate change, noting that climate change can lead to decreased air quality, adversely affecting health, the economy, and the environment. “Poor air quality has negative implications, necessitating integrated management of air quality alongside climate action,” he added.
The initiative would be the same with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) particularly the 3rd target that focused on the health, welfare, and the 13th target that focused on climate change action. The bad air quality would deliver direct impacts not only for the man’s health but also make the climate change worse.
GCMA through Climatology Deputy provided more than 14 integrated climate information services that were designed to fulfill many sectors’ needs. The monitoring of air quality by GCMA would cover the particle concentration in the vulnerable fire forests and reas, and monitoring green-house gas emission in some locations, such as, Bukit Kototabang, Lore Lindu Bariri, and Sorong.
By the event, GCMA did hope to reinforce the multiparty collaboration both in national and international scale to get more environmental developments and maintain the air quality and people’ health when the climate change challenges got more complex. (P2)
