PALMOILMAGAZINE, NUSA DUA – The Ministry of Industry remains committed to advancing palm oil plantation development through a focus on research and collaborative innovation. During the Pekan Riset Sawit Indonesia (Perisai) 2024 event in Nusa Dua, Bali, the Ministry emphasized the importance of collaboration between research and innovation to promote the commercialization of research findings and foster a more modern and sustainable palm oil industry.
Putu Juli Ardika, the General Director of Agro Industry at the Ministry of Industry, stated that palm oil represents a successful downstream industrial model for Indonesia. “The palm oil industry produces a wide range of derivative products, including oleofood, oleochemicals, biofuels, and biomaterials, all of which are environmentally friendly. This demonstrates the significant potential of the palm oil sector to continue developing into future industries,” he said, as reported by Palmoilmagazine.com on Monday, October 7, 2024.
Over the past decade, the number of downstream palm oil products has rapidly increased from 45 to over 200. With exports reaching approximately IDR 450 trillion in 2023, contributing about 11.6% of total non-oil and gas exports, these sectors are poised to become a national economic pillar. Additionally, they provide employment for around 16.2 million workers, both directly and indirectly.

To encourage sustainable downstream sectors, Ministry of Industry would encourage to establish multi-party consortium that would involve researchers, planters, and the government. One successful sample of the consortium is edible – coating technology in palm oil – base. It extends the storage time of tropical fruits. The innovation is about to get food grade certification and would be ready to get commercialized.
Putu also emphasized it would be significant to get collaboration among the research and the industries. “We would do the best to accelerate commercialization process through pro – innovation policies and develop facilities, such as, Indonesia manufacturing center (IMC). IMC should be the place for the industries to continue the research results until they would be massively produced.,” he said. (P2)
