PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Climate change poses a significant challenge for plantation sectors in tropical countries like Indonesia. Rising temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events—such as floods and droughts—directly impact plantation productivity, harvest quality, and sustainability.

However, the Indonesian Planters Society (IPS) recognizes the opportunities within these challenges and is promoting the adoption of technology and adaptive agricultural practices to enhance plantation productivity in the face of climate change.

Edwin Syahputra Lubis from SEVT Research, Innovation, and Sustainability at PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) III Persero, emphasized the substantial potential of palm oil plantations to absorb carbon emissions through carbon sequestration, particularly in peat and mineral soils. “In 2023, of the approximately 16.38 million hectares of palm oil plantations, the sequestration process over eight years could absorb up to 1.683 gigatons of CO₂,” Lubis stated during the “Bincang-Bincang Sawit” event, themed “Innovative Solutions for the Sustainability of Palm Oil Plantations in Facing Climate Change and Increasing Productivity on Marginal Land,” organized by IPS and attended by Palmoilmagazine.com on Saturday, October 5, 2024, in Jakarta.

He also said that one latest innovation that PTPN III has implemented is the weather monitoring in Internet of Things (IoT) – base, called NUSAKLIM. The application would enable the changing weather monitoring in every day and would deliver the early notification about extreme climate change potential in the next 20 days. “Now the tool has been put in 104 spots and 90 percent in PTPN, in Pusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit (PPKS), and 10 percent in some private companies,” Lubis said.

The talk-show would be the part of the inauguration of IPS new coordinators in 2024 – 2027, and led by Jamalul after having national scale – meeting on 8 – 11 August 2024. It is hoped the new coordinators of IPS would prioritize innovations and collaboration to face the plantation challenges in the future, namely in the unexpected climate change. (P3)
