PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA — PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) has successfully obtained the International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC) under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the European Union (EU). This certification recognizes KPI’s production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from used cooking oil (UCO) as meeting global sustainability standards and complying with the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) CORSIA and the European Union.

“The Treated Distillate Hydro Treating (TDHT) unit at the Cilacap Refinery achieved ISCC CORSIA and EU certification for SAF production in early December 2024,” said KPI’s Corporate Secretary, Hermansyah Y Nasroen, in a press statement quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com on Monday, January 13, 2025.

Hermansyah explained that this achievement marks international recognition of KPI’s capability in producing SAF. Beyond SAF, the TDHT unit at the Cilacap Refinery has been producing renewable diesel fuel from 100% vegetable-based raw materials since 2022. This product, known as Pertamina Renewable Diesel (RD) or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), has also received ISCC certification.

To enhance SAF production, KPI launched the “UCO to SAF” project in 2024. Previously, KPI produced SAF using Refined Bleached Deodorized Palm Kernel Oil (RBDPKO) as raw material. Now, KPI is set to produce Indonesia’s first ISCC-certified SAF made from used cooking oil by the first quarter of 2025.

SAF derived from used cooking oil offers significant environmental benefits, reducing carbon emissions by over 90% compared to aviation fuel made entirely from fossil-based oil. Additionally, utilizing used cooking oil as a raw material helps minimize environmental pollution by reducing waste from discarded cooking oil.

Hermansyah also noted that the preparation for SAF production from used cooking oil involves replacing catalysts at the Cilacap Refinery in January 2025. “These catalysts are the result of Pertamina’s Technology and Innovation development, in collaboration with experts and engineers from PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional. They are manufactured domestically, showcasing the advanced technological expertise of Indonesian engineers,” Hermansyah stated.

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at PT Pertamina (Persero), emphasized Pertamina Group’s commitment to developing environmentally friendly energy solutions, including SAF, to support Indonesia’s aviation industry. “Through the development of green fuel, Pertamina is dedicated to fulfilling Indonesia’s energy security and sovereignty mandate while contributing to national sustainability efforts,” Fadjar said.

As a subsidiary of Pertamina specializing in oil and petrochemical refining, KPI adheres to Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles. KPI is also a participant in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and is committed to its Ten Universal Principles. By conducting business professionally, KPI strives to realize its vision of becoming a world-class oil and petrochemical refining company that prioritizes environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and good governance.
