PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – On Friday, October 27, 2023, PT Pertamina and PT Garuda Indonesia achieved a historic milestone by jointly launching the first-ever commercial flight powered by an eco-friendly fuel source, Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), also known as bio aviation turbine fuel (bio-avtur).
This groundbreaking flight departed from Soekarno-Hatta (Soeta) Airport in Tangerang, headed to Adi Soemarmo Airport in Surakarta, and then returned to Jakarta. The use of environmentally sustainable fuel in this endeavor serves as a tangible demonstration of the collaborative commitment between these enterprises to reduce emissions and support the realization of a net-zero emission (NZE) target.
Ceremonial Flight Sustainable Aviation Fuel was happening in Terminal 3 Soekarno-Hatta International Airport as the important event of what Indonesia has gone through heading to realize more sustainable future.

Director of Logistic and Infrastructure PT Pertamina Alfian Nasution said that the company is committed to encourage NZE target as what the Government of Indonesia published by developing decarbonization asset roadmap and green business, including SAF in aviation sector.
“The special flight would be the history in sustainable aviation industries. The journey heading to Pertamina SAF started in 2010 through Research and Technology Innovation Pertamina by having product and catalyst research development. In 2021, PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional successfully produced SAF J2.4 in Refinery Unit IV Cilacap within Co-Processing Technology from its material – Refined Bleached Deodorized Palm Kernel Oil (RBDPKO).
This product had been closely test, including the cell test in facility of Garuda Maintenance Facility, ground run, flight test in military aero-plane – CN-235 belonging to PT Dirgantara Indonesia, until the commercial flight test belonging to Garuda Indonesia on 4 October 2023 with Boeing 737-800 NG.
