PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Legislation Member of DPR RI, Edi Oloan Pasaribu, emphasized DPR’s commitment to draft a law that is able to benefit all parties in the palm oil industry. This policy will consider the interests of independent farmers, plasma farmers, and corporations, all of which play an important role in the palm oil sector as the largest non-oil and gas foreign exchange contributor to the country.
“Our approach is holistic, not only focusing on one party,” Edi said in a Public Hearing Meeting (RDPU) between DPR RI and the Indonesian Palm Oil Entrepreneurs Association (GAPKI), the Indonesian Tobacco Farmers Association (APTI), and the Indonesian Textile Association (API) at the DPR RI Building, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday (4/11/2024). During the meeting, discussed the importance of strict supervision in the implementation of regulations so that they have a real impact on the field.
Edi also mentioned the importance of forming a special body that handles the palm oil industry, given the overlapping regulations from various ministries and institutions that have caused confusion in the field. “The establishment of a centralized palm oil agency will be an important step to regulate and facilitate all stakeholders in this industry,” added the politician from the PAN faction as quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com from Parliamentaria, Wednesday (6/11/2024).

In addition, Edi mentioned the need to create a commercial PKS (Palm Oil Mill) system that can be accessed by smallholders. According to him, the existence of commercial mills without land ownership will allow independent and plasma farmers to sell their products at more competitive prices, preventing them from being dependent on prices controlled by large corporations.
Another strategic step proposed by Edi is to increase the competitiveness of palm oil in the export market by overcoming misperceptions in Europe, where palm oil is often considered environmentally unfriendly. He hopes that the policies drafted later will not only pay attention to domestic interests but also be able to overcome export barriers, including in the European Union.
Through Prolegnas, DPR RI will prioritize these measures to ensure that palm oil remains a leading commodity for Indonesia in the global market, as well as strengthen the position of farmers in the palm oil supply chain in a fair manner. (P2)
