PALMOILMAGAZINE, KUALA LUMPUR — The issue of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from palm oil plantations continues to be a focal point in the global effort to build an environmentally responsible palm oil industry. During the RSPO Annual Roundtable Conference on Sustainable Palm Oil (RT2025) in Kuala Lumpur, discussions on GHG emissions resurfaced—particularly the need for more accurate and transparent emission measurement systems.

RSPO Manager Ashton Lim announced that the organization has developed a more comprehensive calculation system through the GHG Calculator, a tool designed to precisely measure the emission footprint within the palm oil sector.

“GHG calculations can now utilize the calculator that RSPO has been developing since 2024,” said Ashton Lim, as quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com on Wednesday (5 November 2025) in Kuala Lumpur.

She explained that accurate GHG measurement is not merely a reporting requirement, but an essential foundation for shaping sustainable management strategies in the palm oil industry. Through this calculator, plantations and mills will be able to calculate, monitor, and reduce emissions in a measurable way.

Ashton also highlighted the potential of palm oil waste management as a source of renewable energy.

“For instance, electricity can be generated from managing Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME),” she explained.

He further emphasized that with the application of sustainable technologies, every stage of production—from plantations to processing mills—can be managed more efficiently and environmentally. RSPO also encourages all industry players to move toward a zero-waste industry, ensuring that sustainability becomes a concrete practice rather than just a slogan.

This initiative by RSPO is expected to strengthen the position of sustainable palm oil in the global market while addressing concerns over the sector’s contribution to climate change. With more transparent and accurate emission calculations, both Indonesian and global palm oil industries will be better equipped to meet international sustainability standards. (P1)
