PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – So far, economic growth in rural areas has not translated into improved economic well-being for villagers. The Forum for Village Renewal Development or Forum Pengembangan Pembaharuan Desa (FPPD) has observed that despite the rapid increase in productivity and expansion of palm oil plantations, the quality of life and welfare of independent smallholders are not guaranteed.
Although certain regencies in Riau Province serve as significant suppliers of palm oil and contribute significantly to the regional gross domestic product, there are still relatively high levels of poverty prevalent. The findings of FPPD are corroborated by the efforts of the Union of Oil Palm Farmers (SPKS), who have been working on formulating the concept of Sustainable Palm Oil Villages following the enactment (Desa Sawit Lestari after the publication of Laws Number ) of Law Number 6/2014 concerning Villages, as outlined in the Practical Guidebook for Pioneering Sustainable Palm Oil Villages (Buku Praktis Merintis Desa Sawit Lestari).
The book would inform the history of plantations, palm oil governance, the institution and consolidation of desa bersawit and sawit berdesa and would be described more in the chapters, such as, mapping the vegetable and village farmers’ interests, the authority of desa bersawit and propose the budget in sustainable palm oil villages.
There would be pictures in the book to ease the readers to digest the proposal in sustainable palm oil villages which the base would be about to escalate the roles of villages to increase the economy in commodity – base. (T2)
