Food safety verification in Riau marks another step toward expanding Indonesian palm oil access to the Chinese market while reinforcing international compliance standards.
PEKANBARU, Indonesia — Indonesia is strengthening its efforts to expand palm oil exports to China as a palm oil plantation in Riau Province underwent a food safety audit by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), a key requirement for suppliers seeking access to one of the world’s largest edible oil markets.
The audit, supported by Riau Quarantine, forms part of China’s export verification process, which assesses whether plantations comply with international food safety, traceability, and agricultural management standards before they can supply palm oil products to Chinese buyers.
According to Indonesia’s Quarantine Agency, Riau Quarantine Head Abdur Rohman attended the audit on July 30 to ensure the inspection was conducted in accordance with GACC requirements while providing technical guidance to help the company meet China’s import regulations.

GACC auditors carried out a comprehensive assessment of plantation operations, evaluating fertilizer application, pesticide management, agricultural chemical storage, and cultivation practices to ensure compliance with internationally recognized food safety standards.
The inspection also covered the company’s administrative systems, including its implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), product traceability, production input records, and food safety management procedures. These measures are designed to ensure palm oil products can be traced throughout the supply chain and meet the quality standards required by Chinese authorities.
Abdur Rohman said Indonesia’s quarantine services play a strategic role in supporting exporters by ensuring compliance with sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, monitoring plant pests and quarantine pests, and verifying that exported commodities satisfy the technical standards of destination countries.

“This assistance reflects Riau Quarantine’s commitment to helping companies meet all technical requirements set by export destination countries while enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesia’s plantation commodities in international markets,” Abdur Rohman said.
He added that food safety has become an increasingly important requirement in global agricultural trade. Exporters are therefore expected to maintain reliable traceability systems, consistent records of agricultural inputs, and comprehensive documentation to support product quality assurance and consumer safety.

China remains one of the world’s largest importers of palm oil, making compliance with GACC standards an important gateway for Indonesian exporters seeking greater market access.
