Indonesia Strengthens Plantation Innovation Through Multi-Stakeholder Research Partnership in South Lampung

PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture is strengthening the country’s plantation sector through a broad partnership involving government agencies, research institutions, academia, and state-owned enterprises. The collaboration was formalized with the signing of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) on the development of sustainable research and technology for priority plantation crops in South Lampung, aimed at boosting productivity while accelerating downstream processing.

According to information shared by the Directorate General of Plantations (Ditjenbun) on Monday (July 27), the agreement was signed at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs and brought together key stakeholders, including the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Lampung Provincial Government, the South Lampung Regency Government, PT Perkebunan Nusantara I (PTPN I), and Universitas Indonesia Mandiri.

The initiative seeks to integrate scientific research, technological innovation, and practical implementation to support the development of high-value plantation areas in South Lampung. By fostering closer cooperation among institutions, the government aims to speed up the adoption of modern technologies that can enhance productivity and strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesia’s plantation commodities.

Under the agreement, the partners will collaborate on a range of strategic programs, including the development of advanced cultivation technologies, improved planting materials, human resource capacity building, commercialization of research findings, and the expansion of value-added downstream industries for plantation commodities.

Officials expect the application of research outcomes to improve plantation efficiency, enhance product quality, increase market competitiveness, and encourage the growth of regional industries based on plantation commodities.

Representing the Acting Director General of Plantations, Iim Mucharam, Director of Oil Palm and Other Palm Crops, emphasized that sustainable plantation development depends on strong collaboration between government agencies, businesses, universities, and research organizations to ensure innovations are effectively implemented in the field.

He noted that cross-sector partnerships are essential for accelerating the transformation of Indonesia’s plantation industry toward a more modern, efficient, and sustainable production system. With targeted research, adaptive technologies, and active participation from all stakeholders, the sector is expected to make a greater contribution to national economic growth while improving the livelihoods of smallholders and plantation communities.

The initiative also forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Indonesia’s plantation innovation ecosystem by promoting more practical applications of research. Beyond increasing production, the program is designed to create greater added value through regional processing and downstream industrial development, supporting the long-term competitiveness of the country’s leading plantation commodities.
