PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Kaoem Telapak hosted a National Workshop titled “Traceability in EUDR Implementation in Indonesia” on Thursday. The event also marked the launch of Ground-truthed.id (GTID), a web- and Android-based forest monitoring application developed by Kaoem Telapak.

The workshop aimed to enhance Indonesia’s readiness for the European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) and to identify the roles of various stakeholders in ensuring deforestation-free commodity traceability.

“In today’s discussion, EUDR must be thoroughly addressed. All requirements must be met for Indonesia to align with the regulation,” said Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arif Havas Oegroseno, in a written statement quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com on Friday, March 21, 2025.

As a country affected by EUDR due to its major commodities—timber, palm oil, cocoa, coffee, and rubber—Indonesia is taking strategic steps to meet the regulation’s requirements. A key focus is traceability, the ability to track the origin of commodities to ensure they are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation after December 31, 2020.

Sander Happaerts, Green and Digital Counsellor at the EU Delegation for Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, and ASEAN, highlighted the importance of traceability in EUDR.

“European consumers want to know the origins of the products they consume. We are working with multiple stakeholders in Indonesia to find the best solutions, including ensuring smallholder participation in supply chains,” he said.

Challenges and Solutions in Traceability Implementation

Indonesia faces key challenges in traceability, including data gaps and the readiness of farmers and companies to meet the required standards. To address this, the Indonesian government is developing a National Dashboard, a national platform designed to manage commodity traceability data.

“This dashboard will integrate data related to commodity export traceability, ensuring better documentation of farmers and plantation owners,” explained Diah Y. Suradiredja, National Coordinator for the National Dashboard.

Kaoem Telapak’s Contribution: GTID Monitoring App

Alongside government initiatives, Kaoem Telapak has introduced Ground-truthed.id (GTID), a digital tool designed to collect and manage forest and environmental monitoring data from civil society groups, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities in Indonesia. The app aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and advocacy efforts in combating illegal logging, deforestation, and land grabbing.

According to Denny Bhatara, Senior Campaigner at Kaoem Telapak, GTID is equipped with geo-location-based documentation features to support forest monitoring.

“This app serves as an additional monitoring tool, emphasizing on-the-ground documentation and promoting accountability,” he explained.

Kaoem Telapak President Mardi Minangsari welcomed the launch of GTID and encouraged collaboration in its development.

“We hope this platform becomes a tool for monitors to showcase how Indonesia works on the ground and provides a real picture of our land’s condition,” she said.

Through the synergy of monitoring technology, traceability policies, and multi-stakeholder collaboration, Indonesia continues to strengthen its position in meeting global sustainability standards. (P2)
