PALMOILMAGAZINE, MERAUKE – Koperasi Serba Usaha Iska Bekai began establishing palm oil plantations for smallholders in several villages within the Ngguti District, Merauke Regency, South Papua Province, in late July 2024. The project also includes the construction of access roads to connect the plantations with nearby villages.
Abraham E Yolmen, Chairman of Koperasi Iska Bekai, stated that tribal chiefs and local leaders, including those from the neighboring Okaba District, have been consulted and have agreed to the plan. The Regent of Merauke, along with 17 tribes in the project area, also expressed their support.
According to an official statement to Palmoilmagazine.com on Thursday (29/8/2024), the new planting activities are being conducted within the boundaries of the cooperative’s business rights and have received approval from the local communities. Kristianus K Nasemhe, Chairman of The Imo, fully supports the project, expressing hope that the indigenous people will benefit from the palm oil plantations.

Koperasi Iska Bekai that was established to support the indigenous people of Papua’ welfare, cultivated about 20% of the main palm oil plantations. The project covered plasma plantation development as the implementation of Padiatapa/FPIC (Free, Prior and Informed Consent), and three villages supported it.
The operation of the plasma plantations should escalate the economic sustainability of the indigenous people, support the rights of economy, social, and cultural fulfillment for the indigenous people. Koperasi Iska Bekai would be committed to confirm social and economic sustainability for the indigenous communities in Papua through the infrastructure development, palm oil plantation development, empowerment initiatives in economy, social, and health.
