PALMOILMAGAZINE, AMBON – The Province of Maluku, with over 1,340 islands and a sea covering 93% of its total area, faces significant challenges in its development, particularly in addressing the climate crisis. To tackle these challenges, MADANI Berkelanjutan organized the Sekolah Pembangunan on August 23-24, 2024, in Ambon, aimed at engaging Maluku’s young generation in understanding and actively participating in sustainable development.
Nadia Hadad, Executive Director of MADANI Berkelanjutan, emphasized the importance of young people in balancing development with environmental conservation. The climate crisis has a profound impact on archipelagic nations like Indonesia, especially in Maluku, with its many small islands. Rising sea levels will affect the lives, culture, and communities of Maluku, most of whom live along the coast.
“If rapid development continues unchecked, the future could bring even more severe consequences. That’s why the younger generation plays a crucial role in ensuring that development doesn’t harm the environment but instead fosters climate justice,” Nadia stated in an official release to Palmoilmagazine.com on Thursday (29/8/2024).

Through Sekolah Pembangunan, MADANI Berkelanjutan aims to strengthen initiatives among stakeholders to address climate crisis issues.
Resni Soviyana, Lead Program Green Development MADANI Berkelanjutan mentioned that the program would develop collaboration among the young generations, the governments, and other stakeholders. “Sekolah Pembangunan would be the place for the young generations of Maluku to be more critical and careful about environmental conservation, and would be the agent of change,” Resni said.
Resni hoped that Sekolah Pembangunan would be committed and in spirit to always follow every program that would be running in a whole year both online and offline. The program would present speakers from many elements, such as, academy, pratitioners, and the representatives from the governments.
The event was joined by 17 participants from many regions in the Province of Maluku and inaugurated by Dr. Anton A. Lailossa, S.T., M.Si, Head of Regional Development Plan Agency, Province of Maluku. In his keynote speech, Dr. Anton emphasized it would be significant to get and realize sustainable development and the public should get participation in the process.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Agustinus Kastanya, M.S., the Professor of Forest Resource Economy and Plan of University of Pattimura, and Costavina (Vonny) Litamahuputty, senior journalist and Editorial in Chief of Arikamedia attended it. They discussed about the vital roles of young generations in sustainable development in the Province of Maluku.
Maluku Province managed the young generations as one main target in long term – development plan. But to realize sustainable development and be existing in the climate change impacts, it would need the supports from many parties.
Back to Resni Soviyana, she said, “The roles of the young generations need to get increased in every development process to create the care that environmental issues would be important. We have the responsibilities to maintain environmental conservation because this is the rights to live for the next generation.”
With the initiative, just like Sekolah Pembangunan conducted, MADANI Berkelanjutan hoped to create the young generations of Maluku to be aware of climate challenges and be ready to positively contribute to sustainable and fair development. (P2)
