PALMOILMAGAZINE, SAMPITYunan Nasution, a respected community leader in Sampit, has voiced his support for the Attorney General’s investigation into several officials in Central Kalimantan regarding palm oil plantation permits and forest land releases. He highlighted that permit issuance is often poorly communicated to local communities, leading to frequent conflicts between companies and residents.

“I believe that the licensing process for opening palm oil plantations in Sampit has not been fully socialized to key stakeholders, especially local communities. As a result, disputes often arise between companies and residents who have traditionally managed the land. While companies hold legal permits from central to local authorities, residents rely solely on customary land rights,” Yunan told Palmoilmagazine.com via WhatsApp on Monday (February 10, 2025).

Yunan further pointed out that local communities often face long and complex legal battles when disputing land with companies.

“When land disputes arise within corporate plantations, people are advised to take legal action. However, many are reluctant because the process is lengthy and time-consuming, and they are uncertain whether their rights will be recognized by the law,” he explained.

As part of his commitment to fair and transparent legal enforcement, Yunan expressed his willingness to provide data on plantation permits in Sampit to the Attorney General’s Office.

“I have no personal interests in this matter. I am simply concerned about the ongoing conflicts between communities and companies, which have even led to fatalities as people fight for their land rights.”

He emphasized that support for law enforcement is crucial to ensure a smooth and transparent judicial process.

“I hope the law is enforced fairly—not only targeting small communities but also holding large corporations and officials accountable for any permit violations,” he concluded. (P2)
