BPS Reports 219 Palm Oil Companies Dominate East Kalimantan Plantation Sector in 2025

PALMOILMAGAZINE, SAMARINDA — Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik / BPS) of East Kalimantan reported that hundreds of agricultural companies were active in the plantation subsector throughout 2025, with palm oil emerging as the overwhelmingly dominant commodity.

According to the 2025 update of the Agricultural Company Directory (DPP), a total of 223 plantation companies were recorded in the province. Of these, 219 companies were engaged in palm oil cultivation, while only six companies operated in the rubber sector.

The data was published in the Agricultural Company Directory (DPP) of East Kalimantan 2025 Volume 3, officially released on March 9, 2026. BPS noted that a single company may manage more than one plantation commodity.

Plantation activities are spread across eight regencies and cities in East Kalimantan, covering 18 different commodities. These include cloves, cashew nuts, cocoa, rubber, oil palm, coconut, candlenut, robusta coffee, pepper, nutmeg, sago, tea, arabica coffee, hybrid coconut, sugarcane, tobacco, and other perennial and seasonal crops.

Regionally, Kutai Timur recorded the highest number of plantation companies, with 78 firms or approximately 34.98% of the provincial total. This was followed by Kutai Barat with 31 companies (13.90%) and Paser with 30 companies (13.45%).

Meanwhile, Kutai Kartanegara accounted for 29 companies (13.01%), while Berau recorded 25 companies (11.21%). Penajam Paser Utara and Balikpapan each had 11 companies (4.93%), and Mahakam Ulu had 8 companies (3.59%).

Palm oil clearly dominates the plantation landscape, accounting for 219 companies or 95.22% of the total. The majority of these are concentrated in Kutai Timur with 77 companies, followed by Kutai Barat (31 companies) and Paser (30 companies).

Rubber ranks as the second most cultivated commodity, with six companies (2.61%), located in Kutai Kartanegara (3 companies), Paser (2 companies), and Kutai Timur (1 company).

Other perennial crops make up a small portion of the sector, with only two companies (0.87%), located in Paser and Kutai Kartanegara.

The data underscores the central role of palm oil in East Kalimantan’s plantation economy, highlighting its dominance in both scale and geographic spread across the province. (P2)
