After serving the campus community for more than three decades, Kantin Rimbawan has been revitalized with a design that prioritizes comfort, sustainability, and social interaction. Beyond functioning as a dining facility, the renovated space is intended to foster collaboration, idea-sharing, and stronger connections among members of the academic community.

Dean of the Faculty of Forestry and Environment at IPB University, Dodik Ridho Nurrochmat, emphasized the importance of having a representative and welcoming campus facility that can support both academic and social activities.

He noted that the university had long lacked a canteen capable of reflecting the institution’s standards and identity, particularly when hosting guests and international students. The upgraded facility is expected to serve as a showcase of the university’s ongoing efforts to enhance campus infrastructure and student experience.

According to the faculty, the project goes beyond physical renovation. The new Kantin Rimbawan is also expected to encourage positive behavioral changes among students and business operators, including greater awareness of cleanliness, responsible waste management, and improved business practices.

Today, the canteen hosts 16 micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), operated by alumni and members of surrounding communities. Their participation strengthens the facility’s role as an inclusive economic space that creates opportunities and generates benefits for local stakeholders.

From the corporate side, Musim Mas President Director Gunawan Siregar expressed hope that the facility would become more than simply a place to eat.

He said the company envisions Kantin Rimbawan as a vibrant gathering place where discussions, collaboration, and innovative ideas can emerge from everyday interactions. He also encouraged the campus community to maintain and preserve the facility so that future generations can continue to benefit from it.

Sustainability principles were incorporated throughout the design process. The renovated canteen utilizes durable, low-maintenance materials to minimize long-term upkeep requirements while ensuring operational efficiency.

The building also maximizes natural ventilation through wind-powered turbine ventilators, incorporates larger openings to improve airflow, and uses transparent roofing elements to increase natural lighting and reduce energy consumption. Additional facilities include a prayer room and two restroom units to enhance user comfort.

Students have welcomed the transformation enthusiastically. Syahrul, a forestry student at IPB University, said the upgraded canteen has significantly improved the campus experience by providing a more comfortable place not only for meals but also for discussions, social interaction, and group activities after classes.

The inauguration represents another milestone in the long-standing partnership between Musim Mas and IPB University, which has spanned more than 15 years. During that time, the collaboration has extended beyond infrastructure development to include human resource development and industry-academia engagement, with many IPB graduates now contributing to various functions within Musim Mas.

The partnership highlights the value of closer cooperation between universities and industry in creating mutually beneficial ecosystems that strengthen educational quality while preparing graduates for evolving workforce needs.

Through the revitalization of Kantin Rimbawan, both Musim Mas and IPB University hope to create a space that not only serves daily campus needs but also strengthens community bonds, encourages meaningful interactions, and contributes to a more sustainable and dynamic educational environment. (P3)
