West Papua Develops Regional Action Plan for Sustainable Palm Oil Under RAD KSB Initiative

PALMOILMAGAZINE, MANOKWARI – The Plantation, Horticulture, and Food Plant Agency of West Papua, along with five local groups, has developed a regional action plan for sustainable palm oil, known as Rencana Aksi Daerah Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan (RAD KSB), for the province.

This initiative is part of the government’s effort to implement plantation concepts that consider social, economic, and ecological aspects.

Agustinus Warbaal, the acting head of the agency, stated that RAD KSB is a crucial component of a five-phase process to promote sustainable palm oil plantations. “RAD KSB is a national program that requires regional adaptation. Each region or province must develop its own plan,” Agustinus explained in Manokwari on Thursday.

The formulation of RAD KSB aligns with Presidential Instruction Number 6/2019 concerning the Rencana Aksi Nasional Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan (RAN KSB). The program, which began in March 2024, has completed three of its five significant phases: the establishment of the formulation team at the regional level, program identification and data collection, and the creation of the action plan.

“The next phase will involve a public consultation, which will be conducted before the plan is officially inaugurated by the governor,” Warbaal added, as reported by Palmoilmagazine.com from Antara on Saturday (24/8/2024).

RAD would be the guidelines to palm oil plantation cultivation in West Papua in 2024 – 2026. Every document would be synchronized with Regional Development Plan Agency and Land and Environment Agency West Papua to confirm that every aspect relating to sustainability and legal would be carefully considered.

Benediktus Hery, Head of Plantation, Plantation, Horticulture, and Food Plant Agency West Papua said the working groups would play their roles significantly to make sure that RAD successful. The groups would be in charge on some aspects, such as, data reinforcement, planters’ capacity enhancement, environment monitor, case solution, and ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil) certificates.

The formulation of RAD would be getting public test that would involve the people around palm oil plantations. “After getting public test, the documents would be handed over for the government to be officially regualated,” Benediktus said. (P2)
