PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – The future competitiveness of the plantation industry will depend not only on technological innovation but also on the quality of human capital, organizational culture, and operational excellence, according to Wilmar International.
The company shared this perspective during the 11th International Planters Conference in Kuala Lumpur, organized by the Incorporated Society of Planters (ISP), where industry leaders discussed strategies for building a more resilient and sustainable plantation sector.
Speaking at the conference, Gurcharan Singh, Group Plantation Head at Wilmar International, presented a session titled “Driving Plantation Performance to Excellence: Wilmar’s Experience,” outlining the company’s approach to improving plantation performance across its operations.

According to Singh, plantation companies are facing increasingly complex challenges, including labor shortages, rising operating costs, changing workforce expectations, and stricter sustainability and regulatory requirements. These trends, he said, require companies to pursue comprehensive business transformation to remain competitive.
Drawing on Wilmar’s experience managing plantations across multiple countries, Singh emphasized that operational excellence extends beyond investments in new technologies.
“Success is also driven by strong leadership, consistent implementation of operational standards, continuous employee capability development, a robust safety culture, and the integration of mechanization, digitalization, and sustainability principles throughout plantation operations,” he said.

Singh added that building a resilient plantation sector will require a shift in organizational mindset. He noted that improvements in workplace culture and operating standards must progress alongside technological adoption to maximize the benefits of innovation.
Wilmar also stressed the importance of industry collaboration in accelerating productivity improvements while addressing evolving global challenges. According to the company, international forums such as the International Planters Conference provide valuable opportunities for plantation companies to exchange knowledge, share innovations, and promote best practices that support a modern and sustainable plantation industry.
