Minister SYL: SRP has Proven to be Instrumental in Helping Smallholders Enhance the Quality and Sustainability

PALMOILMAGAZINE, TELUK GELAM – Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL), has expressed his support for South Sumatra Province to become the leading pilot project for palm oil cultivation in the country. He emphasized the importance of implementing agricultural system tools and expanding the smallholders’ replanting program (SRP) to achieve this goal.

SYL believes that over the years, the SRP has proven to be instrumental in helping smallholders enhance the quality and sustainability of their palm oil plantations. With these measures in place, South Sumatra Province has the potential to set a positive example for palm oil cultivation nationwide.

“Today we did our first palm oil harvest from SRP where it was planted few years ago. I would like to thank for everyone, including regional government for helping the people to get this incredible and sustainable SRP by applying agricultural system tools,” SYL said in the first SRP harvest in Sub district of Teluk Gelam, District of OKI, South Sumatera Province, as in the official statement to Palmoilmagazine.com, Monday, 17 July 2023.

He also mentioned, palm oil is the mainstay commodity that the world needs of. That is why SRP should get expansion in many palm oil centers (regions) in Indonesia. the government targeted that SRP would be running in 21 provinces that cover 180 thousand hectares per year.

“We have to realize the target and we should agree with, for all these years, palm oil is the mainstay for our country for the interests of our nation,” he said.

For information, SRP in 2017 – 2022 covered 295.365 hectares, in 2023 it covered 68.000 hectares. SRP realization in South Sumatera province in 2017 – 2023 laid about 59.329 hectares. The first harvest this year would cover 1.157 hectares where it was planted in 2020.

Governor of South Sumatera, Herman Deru thanked Ministry of Agriculture for realizing SRP in District of OKI. Herman told that the province is ready to conduct what Minister SYL would lead to expand SRP.

“We promise to expand SRP in this province. We thank for the helping for us about seeds namely banks of plantation seeds and agricultural tools,” he said. (T2)
