Ministry of Industry Boosts Palm Oil Downstream Sector to Sustain Global Leadership and Innovate in Batik and Craft Industries

PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Industry is committed to expanding the palm oil downstream sector to enhance the value of palm oil derivatives, ensuring Indonesia’s position as the world’s largest palm oil producer, with an annual output of 45.5 million metric tons.

Andi Rizaldi, Head of the Industrial Service Policy and Standardization Agency (BSKJI) at the Ministry of Industry, stated that the palm oil downstream sector will not only focus on producing vegetable oil but also other products, such as stearin and barrier materials for batik made from palm oil shells.

“This will allow palm oil-based products to be utilized in the batik and craft industries,” he said in an official statement to Palmoilmagazine.com on Friday (30/8/2024).

In South Kalimantan, where palm oil plantations cover approximately 427,000 hectares, there is significant potential to develop batik and craft industries using palm oil-based materials. To capitalize on this potential, the Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (PO PFMA) and BSKJI units organized the Palm Oil Product Diversification Promotion and Halal Workshop, along with a Woven Craft workshop in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan.

Head of Center of Standardization and Services for Handicraft and Batik Industry or Balai Besar Standardisasi dan Pelayanan Jasa Industri Kerajinan dan Batik (BBSPJIKB), Budi Setiawan said that the workshop would be about to increase the workers’ skills in the province to make written batik and woven crafts from natural non-textile fiber. By having competency certificate, the industries should take advantages on palm oil potential more optimal.

Anwar Sadat from PO PFMA said that the program would be about to develop batik industries, reinforce palm oil product images from Indonesia for the world particularly in halal product aspect. It is hoped to positively deliver impacts for the industries and increase the competition in the globe.

The same workshop would be the same in East Java in September 2024 as part of the continuous efforts to promote palm oil diversification products from Indonesia. (P2)
