PALMOILMAGAZINE, SELANGOR — Malaysia’s palm oil sector is entering a new phase of green energy transition with the launch of a B30 biodiesel pilot project by SD Guthrie Berhad, in collaboration with the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK), Petronas Dagangan Berhad (PDB), and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). The official launch took place on Carey Island, officiated by the Minister of Plantation and Commodities, YB Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
As part of this initiative, all diesel-powered machinery and vehicles operating on Carey Island under SD Guthrie will run on B30 biodiesel—a blend of 30% palm-based biodiesel and 70% petroleum diesel. This fuel mix is expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 23% per liter compared to conventional diesel. The biodiesel supply for this pilot is sourced from PDB’s terminal in Melaka.
YB Datuk Seri Johari hailed the initiative as a milestone for sustainable development in Malaysia’s plantation industry. “Palm biodiesel not only supports our national decarbonization goals but also paves the way for the full implementation of the B30 mandate in the near future,” he stated, as quoted Palmoilmagazine.com from the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities on Sunday (July 20, 2025).
The Ministry also reiterated its full support for the project, which aligns with the National Biodiesel Program that began in 2011. Overall, the pilot is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 9,000 tons annually—equivalent to the emissions from over 1,950 vehicles.
This initiative represents a significant achievement in Malaysia’s green energy roadmap and further positions biodiesel as a competitive, eco-friendly alternative fuel for the future. (P2)
