PALMOILMAGAZINE, ACEH TAMIANG – The embankment along the riverbanks of Sungai Tamiang in Seruway is causing concern due to erosion in its upper sections, attributed to the force of the river flow. In response, the District of Aceh Tamiang is taking measures to mitigate the risk of potential flooding.
During a visit to Pekan Seruway on Monday (22/1/24), the acting Regent of Aceh Tamiang, Drs. Asra, declared the situation an emergency, emphasizing the need for a short-term solution. The construction of cribs is being pursued to prevent further damage to the embankment.
“This is a very critical situation. We are worried that if there is another flood, the embankment will be compromised,” Agra expressed, as quoted from the official page of Aceh Tamiang on Friday (26/1/2024).
The cribs, constructed using palm oil rods, commenced on Tuesday (16/1/2024) in Pekan Seruway. It is anticipated that these cribs will be completed at three locations along the river within 18 days, providing a tangible response to the embankment crisis in Sungai Tamiang.
Head of Regional Disaster Management Agency Aceh Tamiang, Iman Suhery said his institution took advantages palm oil to minimize the flood threat. With the targets 17 bends completed by the cribs this year, the institution hoped to minimize the impacts of flood in the region.
Though Sungai Tamiang authority is managed by Aceh Province, District of Aceh Tamiang took the initiative to conduct emergency and risk mitigation to minimize the flood risks.
“We could no do much for having no authority but this is only emergency and mitigation only,” Regent Asra said. (T2)
