PALMOILMAGAZINE, BANYUASIN — Hundreds of palm oil plantation workers in Tanjung Lago Village, Tanjung Lago District, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, staged a peaceful protest demanding their status be changed from daily workers (BHL) to permanent employees.
Nyatu Susantika, the Village Head of Tanjung Lago, who supported the protest, stated that the workers also called for clarity regarding severance pay for those terminated without compensation. “We demand that former BHL workers be promoted to permanent employee status. Additionally, employees who have been laid off should receive proper compensation, as many have served the company for 5 to 10 years,” Nyatu explained, as reported by Palmoilmagazine.com via PalTV on Monday (January 13, 2025).
The protest highlighted the workers’ frustration over what they perceived as unfair working conditions. One worker, who requested anonymity, expressed that all they wanted was recognition of their contributions. “We are simply asking for certainty and respect for the years we’ve dedicated to this company,” they stated.
In response, Joko, Manager of PT Swadaya Indo Palma, said the company would promptly address the issue with relevant stakeholders. “Since this involves three institutions, we will coordinate with them to find the best solution,” Joko assured.
The peaceful protest was closely monitored by local police to ensure order. The workers are optimistic that mediation will occur soon, ensuring their demands receive serious consideration from the company.
The local community also voiced support for the workers’ cause. The village head emphasized the importance of finding a fair and transparent resolution for both parties. “We will continue to support them until a just agreement is reached,” Nyatu concluded. (P2)
