JAMBI — In a significant move aligned with the spirit of Kartini Day, Jambi witnessed the launch of a new chapter for women’s rights in the palm oil industry. At the Aston Hotel Jambi, more than 100 participants—from companies, farmers, labor unions, students, women’s organizations, activists, and government officials—gathered with one shared goal: to advance protection for women workers in the palm oil sector.

In a room filled with purpose and solidarity, Sumarjono Saragih, Head of Human Resource Development at GAPKI Central, delivered a compelling message. “Women workers are vital to the sustainability of Indonesia’s palm oil industry. They are key to achieving Golden Indonesia 2045. That’s why GAPKI is initiating a collaborative campaign—creating a women-friendly palm oil industry must be our joint mission,” he said, as quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com on Saturday (April 26, 2025).

The event went beyond symbolism. Representing the Governor of Jambi, Acting Head of the Provincial Manpower Office, Dodi Haryanto Parmin, emphasized that while Jambi has earned national awards for labor achievements, significant challenges remain.

“We expect this event to result in a real, shared commitment. Seminars alone are not enough—we must follow through. Protecting women workers must involve all stakeholders,” Dodi stated firmly.

GAPKI responded immediately. Ryan Harry, Chair of GAPKI Jambi, expressed his branch’s readiness to act.
“We have many good practices in the field ready to be shared. GAPKI Jambi is committed to being part of this change, with full support from GAPKI Central,” he said.

The seminar and workshop are part of GAPKI’s ongoing nationwide program. A key tool in this effort is a practical guidebook on protecting women workers—developed in collaboration with the HUKATAN labor union and CNV International in 2021. The book now serves as an active field manual, not just a shelf document.

This initiative marks a tangible step forward toward a more equitable palm oil industry in Jambi. It’s not just a conversation—it’s a cross-sector commitment to fairness. For GAPKI and its partners, protecting women is not only a matter of justice but also a foundation for a more sustainable and inclusive future for Indonesia. (P2)
