PALMOILMAGAZINE, YOGYAKARTA – The Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a public lecture titled “The Future of Superior Palm Oil: Short, Early Maturing, High Unsaturated Oil, Compact Plants, Ganoderma-Resistant” on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

The keynote speaker, Professor Kukuh Setiawan, also known as Cak Kukuh, is an expert in plantation breeding and superior palm oil cultivation from the University of Lampung.

During his presentation, Prof. Kukuh discussed the future development of palm oil plantations, highlighting characteristics such as shorter trees, faster fresh fruit bunch (FFB) production, and resistance to diseases like Ganoderma. He emphasized that these breeding innovations would be crucial in addressing global challenges related to climate change and market demands, particularly in promoting sustainability and efficient production.

“Developing superior palm oil should not only increase productivity but also reduce production costs while remaining environmentally friendly,” Prof. Kukuh stated, as quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com from UGM’s official website on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. He also noted that these advancements could significantly boost Indonesia’s global competitiveness in the palm oil industry.

The lecturer was attended by many academies, researchers, students and they were enthusiastic to know more about palm oil breeding. In the interactive discussion, the participants questioned about the research result implementation of his, and the chances to develop this commodity to get competitive exports.

Dean of Faculty of Biology, UGM, Prof. Budi Setiadi Daryono did apprediate Prof. Kukuh for delivering his valuable knowedge. “We are thankful for your presence, Prof. Kukuh. What you delivered was really relevant with agricultural development namely in superior palm oil breeding,” Prof. Budi said.

By the activity, it is hoped the academy, researchers, practititioners would get motivated to innvate and collaborate, and also create sustainable solution to support palm oil sectors in Indonesia. It should be the inspiration for young generations to keep delivering the best in sustainable agriculture. (P2)
