PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Accelerating a certification scheme, particularly concerning smallholders, presents challenges due to the significant number of independent smallholders.
Musdhalifah Machmud, , emphasized the need for smallholders to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that the palm oil sector remains the world’s top producer.
Musdhalifah stressed that the implementation of sustainable principles is complex and not straightforward for smallholders. To adhere to these principles, smallholders must have a clearly defined and legally recognized plantation status, and their operations should not encroach into forest regions.

It is crucial that palm oil production demonstrates a real boost in economic value to achieve both advantages and goals. If productivity remains low and harvest production fails to cover production costs, it indicates that smallholders are not implementing the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification because they are not reaping the associated benefits.
The main environmental (principle) is about to deliver income, welfare the smallholders, and eventually get better economy in the region. “One thing for sure, the positivity is that there would be infrastructure supports,” she said. (T2)
