PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Shatadru Chattopadhayay, the Regional Managing Director of Solidaridad Asia, mentioned that they have engaged in extensive discussions with the governments of Malaysia and Indonesia. In a broader context, numerous independent smallholders are confronting unique challenges.
In contrast, the European Union has taken a significant step by announcing the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), aimed at halting the supply chain of commodities linked to forest destruction. This initiative promotes the adoption of sustainable palm oil practices.
Shatadru emphasized the existence of a certification model, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which serves as an encouragement for sustainable practices and has been adopted by numerous producer and consumer countries.

In every palm oil producer country, Indonesia, for instance, has implemented Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) scheme. This happens in India by publishing India Palm Oil Sustainability framework (IPOS).
“That is why the cooperation with Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) would reinforce sustainable practices in smallholders’ levels,” Shatadru said.
He continued, EUDR would encourage his side to cooperate with CPOPC and other members to confirm EUDR would be implemented in smallholders’ level.
“Though India has bigger chance to trade, but the cooperation would be the chance for both countries to encourage independent smallholders’ products to be solve in European Union,” he said. (T2)
