PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – The expansion of palm oil plantations in Indonesia accelerated, leading to a significant increase in both land use and crude palm oil (CPO) production in 2018. This surge was attributed to the growing number of palm oil companies, resulting in plantations sprawling across approximately 14.33 million hectares.
However, from 2019 to 2022, the growth of palm oil plantations experienced a notable slowdown. The latest data from 2022 revealed a marginal development, with plantations now covering about 15.34 million hectares. This information was quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com, which sourced data from the “Indonesian Palm Oil Statistical Yearbook 2022” published by Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
Still from the same source, palm oil plantations developed in 26 provinces in Sumatera, Kalimantan, West Java, Banten, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua, and West Papua.

Riau was the biggest producer in 2022 that contributed 18,70 percent of the total plantations that laid on 2,87 million hectares.
“Of the numbers, Riau Province produced 8,74 million tons CPO in 2022,” the book noted.
Though the plantations developed, the 2022 cultivation structures remained stable that big private companies dominated for about 56 percent of the total areas, then people’s plantation about 40,51 percent, and the rests, 3,57 percent were dominated by the country. (T2)
