PALMOILMAGAZINE, MEDAN – Introducing immature palm oil trees among mature, productive ones will not effectively boost palm oil production. Djend Muhayat from Pusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit (PPKS) Medan explained that placing younger trees among 13-year-old palm oil trees is counterproductive. Mature trees should be allowed to continue producing without interference.
Productive palm oil trees require ample space, sunlight, and water. When these trees are overshadowed or competed with by younger plants, it can disrupt their access to essential resources and negatively impact their productivity. Muhayat emphasized that such practices could significantly reduce overall production.
To enhance production, Muhayat recommends optimizing water and sunlight access, ensuring adequate spacing, and providing sufficient nutrients for the trees.

“The potential decreasing production should be known by implementing the right technical issue, not by multiplying the population of the plants randomly. Everything has its own good, the management should be adjustable with the plants’ capacity and needs,” Djend Muhayat explained, as Palmoilmagazine.com quoted from from PPKSTV, Saturday (27/7/2024).
It means, the wise things to cultivate palm oil plantations would be the need to confirm the optimal production without scarifying the quality and environmental sustainability. (P2)
