PALMOILMAGAZINE. JAKARTA – The Indonesian government is firmly committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, aligning with the global consensus outlined in the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (E-NDC) document.
This ambitious objective aims to achieve a GHG emission reduction of up to 32%, equivalent to 358 million tons of CO2 through independent efforts, and a 41% reduction, translating to 446 million tons of CO2, with support from other countries by the year 2030.
One of the primary strategies proposed by the Indonesian government to achieve these targets is the utilization of biomass as a renewable energy source.
Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi, the Director General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, emphasized the importance of harnessing biomass in the decarbonization process.

During his participation in the Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week 2023 in Jakarta, Yudo highlighted the pivotal role of biomass in realizing a state of net-zero emissions (NZE).
One mainstay biomass is biodiesel. Biodiesel is used as the mixture to diesel in motor vehicles. Yudo thought, biodiesel offers solution as cleaner and environmental fuel than conventional fuel (fossil one). “Biodiesel is used not only to reduce green-house gas (GHG) emission but also air pollution significantly,” he said, as in the official statement to Palmoilmagazine.com, Tuesday (11/10/2023).
Indonesia is the pioneer to advantage palm oil biodiesel production. Palm oil biodiesel mixture program to fossil diesel has been running since February 2023 with the percentage up to 35 percent or known as B35. There have been positive results, such as, GHG emission reduction reached 27,8 million tons CO2e in 2022, thanks to B30 mandatory program. It significantly saved emission, which was equal to 11 million kiloliters (kl) biodiesel and economic value reaching more than US$ 10 billion.
In 2023, the government decided biodiesel quota to be 13,15 million kl. It is hoped economic advantages from the program could be more than US$ 11,2 billion. “It proves that investment in renewable energy sector delivered profits not only for the environment but reinforced the economy nationally,” Yudo said.
