Exploring the Potential of Sabah Palm Oil Biomass Policy

PALMOILMAGAZINE, KOTA KINABALU – The Malaysian state of Sabah has recently unveiled its policy regarding palm oil biomass. In an official statement, Phoong Jin Zhe, the Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneurship Development Sabah, emphasized that this policy is intended to support the long-term development of the palm oil biomass industry in the state, contributing to its sustainable socioeconomic growth.

Phoong also mentioned in 2021, Sabah produced about 45 million metric tonss of palm oil biomass. “The numbers include empty bunches, mesocarp fiber, palm kernel, palm oil waste, palm oil stalk, and midrib. These showed that biomass downstream industries are potential. That is why State of Sabah at the principle, agreed to publish its Biomass Policy to regulate supply and downstream palm oil biomass industries,” Phoong said, as Palmoilmagazine.com quoted from News Straits Times.

He also told the Cabinet of Sabah agreed to apply POIC Lahad Datu as the platform to be the spear of policy implementation.

According to data, Sabah is the biggest palm oil producer in Malaysia within the total planted areas more than 1,5 million hectares or about 27 percent of the total pam oil plantations in Malaysia that laid about 5,7 million hectares.

Sabah is the biggest crude palm oil (CPO) producer in Malaysia that contributed about 4,36 million metric tonss of 18,12 million metric tonss of the total CPO production in 2021.Phoong said, Sabah is palm kernel, crude palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake producer.

He also emphasized that it is significant for State of Sabah to introduce its own policy to regulate biomass. The main products from palm oil biomass are, bio-pallet, bio-ethanol, bio-palm gas, chemical materials, composite wood, and furniture.

He also took big stakeholders to see palm oil downstream industries. According to Phoong, Sabah would run publish policy and incentive to help create environmental palm oil industries. (T2)
